Letters, Lost And Returned – A Mixed Media Workshop

Five weeks. One alphabet. Lost, then found again – as your own art.

There’s a creative vision of the use of the alphabet you haven’t met yet – the one that existed before it knew how to spell anything. Before it was legible, letters were used as a picture. Before it was a picture, it was a body in motion.

Over five Monday nights from 19.00 – 21.00, starting on Monday 14th September, we go looking for those letters – tracing them back through image, gesture, and structure, and through painters who let language loose on the canvas to say what paint alone couldn’t: Cy Twombly’s restless scrawl, Ed Ruscha’s deadpan single words hanging like weather. 

We will borrow from many creative fields fields – architecture, music, botany – because the best ideas for a creative project rarely come from just one. You are invited to creatively play. And at the end, something returns. Not the alphabet we started with – an image, a version of it that’s unmistakably ours.

Writers, painters, designers welcome. No calligraphy skills, no tidy handwriting required. Just a willingness to lose the letter for a while so you can find it again.
